7 reasons why adult ballet dancers have all the fun

Any dance mum or dad will know the benefits of enrolling their kids in dance. They learn self-discipline and poise, improve their strength, flexibility, and fitness and, most importantly, have fun. But did you know these benefits aren't exclusive to kids? In fact, ballet can be of even greater benefit to us as we age than when we're young. Here are seven reasons to pull on your ballet shoes:

Any dance mum or dad will know the benefits of enrolling their kids in dance. They learn self-discipline and poise, improve their strength, flexibility, and fitness and, most importantly, have fun. But did you know these benefits aren't exclusive to kids? In fact, ballet can be of even greater benefit to us as we age than when we're young. Here are seven reasons to pull on your ballet shoes:

1.   Meet other adults
Sounds simple right, but adulting is hard! We can become so bogged down in work, household chores or the lives of our kids that we forget to nurture our own social connections. Dance is an excellent way to meet like-minded people, forge new friendships and maybe share a laugh as you step your way through some new choreography.

2.   Bend and stretch
There's nothing like ballet for improving your flexibility, creating long, lean muscles and working up a sweat. Whether it's for weight loss or weight control, ballet can improve your fitness, build strength and increase your endurance – just what you need to chase around those kids.

3.   Let it go
No, we're not saying watch Frozen for the umpteenth time. We're telling you to use ballet to release the day's tensions and frustrations in a positive way. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain and trigger a positive feeling in the body. It's the feel good experience without the Disney soundtrack.

4.   It's all about balance
We've probably all had a laugh about breaking a hip when we're older but falls are a major health issue in the community with about 30% of adults over 65 experiencing at least one fall per year. Ballet helps strengthen our core, improving agility, balance and coordination, all of which we need to stay upright when it counts.

5.   Never forget a step
We all start to forget as we age and there are lots of studies these days showing that feeding your mind can help ward off conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's. Stepping up to the barre, memorising dance steps and coordinating different parts of your body all helps to get your grey matter working. So put down the Sudoku and pull on your tights because we're busy adults with things to do and no time to forget.

6.   Love your body, love yourself
Bringing all the boys to the yard with your milkshakes may not be a priority but that's no reason you can't love your body and feel good about yourself. Boost your self-esteem and confidence by participating in a safe and inclusive dance space where all abilities are catered for. Now you can really start to dance like nobody's watching.

7.   Be your own boss
Maybe you weren't allowed to dance as a child, your family circumstances meant it was out of reach, or you simply didn't have the interest when you were young. Now is the perfect time to reclaim the childhood you may have longed for but never got to experience. Let Newcastle Dance Academy help bring your dreams to fruition.
